A camel-trader passing through the salt flats west of Jaisalmer in the year corresponding to the decline of Nadir Shah's shadow over Rajputana reported that he sheltered one twilight within the abandoned lanes of Kuldhara and heard, from no discernible throat, a low and rhythmic utterance resembling neither Sanskrit mantra nor the familiar Marwari lament for the dead — something older, he insisted, like stone learning to grieve. The presence did not manifest visibly, yet the trader's animals refused to advance, and the oil in his lamp burned with a flame that cast no shadow, a phenomenon the local bhopa priests of the region associate with antardhāna-sattva, beings that have withdrawn from form but not from intention. He reported that the utterance ceased precisely at the moment the sun's last light left the sandstone walls, as though the voice required neither darkness nor day but only the threshold between them. When he reached Pokaran the following morning, he could not reproduce the sounds he had heard, claiming they had no analogue in any human tongue he knew.

Kuldhara, a settlement of the Paliwal Brahmin community abandoned under circumstances that remain historically contested — variously attributed to political oppression, resource failure, or a collective śāpa (curse) invoked upon departure — occupies a liminal position in the folkloric geography of the Thar Desert, functioning less as a ruin than as a kṣetrapāla zone, a terrain still under the guardianship of unresolved spiritual claims. The account was recovered from a third-generation oral transmission documented by a district patwari in the Jaisalmer collectorate records of the late colonial period, the original testimony having passed through at least two intermediate narrators before reaching written form, which introduces the expected layering of embellishment but does not, in this investigator's assessment, fundamentally compromise its folkloric integrity.
